Hugo Cruz and Caminos

Hugo Alexander Cruz Machado is an award-winning Cuban-born drummer and composer leading the group Caminos, which blends Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz and funk. He has performed internationally, including at prominent venues such as the Smithsonian Institution and the Jazz Plaza festival in Havana. Hugo's debut album with Caminos, "Punto de Partida," was released in 2022, featuring original compositions and collaborations with musicians from Pittsburgh and Cuba. He is also dedicated to music education, teaching workshops and courses at various institutions and receiving multiple grants to support his projects and performances.

John Shannon's Adventure Time

John Shannon is a guitarist and composer who grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and began playing music at age 6. After working professionally during high school and studying with local greats Dwayne Dolphin, Eric Kloss, and Mike Ross, he went on to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with jazz luminaries Mick Goodrick and Hal Crook. John also formed the group Waking Vision Trio with musicians during this time and began touring Europe at 19. Moving to New York City, John performed as a freelance guitarist for many artists and albums across genres, such as Sonya Kitchell, Hiromi, and Bob Reynolds. During this time, John also recorded three records under his name for the record label ObliqSound.

Kurt Elling’s voice is instantly recognizable, embracing listeners with his warm, rich baritone and navigating the full span of his four-octave range as a virtuoso improvisor and a compelling storyteller. The Guardian (UK) has named Kurt Elling, “a kind of Sinatra with superpowers,” and, “one of jazz’s all-time great vocalists.” He brings his latest big band project to our stage, which he’ll perform with our very own Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra.

Led by bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton, the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra’s sound is often described as being influenced by Ellington, Basie and Thad Jones. Mindi Abair

During her remarkable 24-year recording career, saxophonist/vocalist Mindi Abair has garnered 2 GRAMMY nominations recorded with some of the biggest names in music, and built a substantial following among jazz and blues audiences with her soaring melodies and powerhouse style. In 2014, Mindi received her first GRAMMY nomination in the Best Pop Instrumental Album category for Summer Horns with Dave Koz, Richard Elliot and Gerald Albright, followed by a 2015 GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for her solo LP Wild Heart featuring the late Gregg Allman, Joe Perry, Trombone Shorty, Booker T. Jones, Keb’ Mo’, and Max Weinberg.

Endea Owens & the Cookout with Michael Mayo

A double bill of two immensely talented rising stars of jazz! 

Known as one of Jazz’s most vibrant emerging artists, Endea Owens is a Detroit-raised Recording Artist, Bassist, and Composer. She has been mentored by Jazz Icons the likes of Marcus Belgrave, Rodney Whitaker, and Ron Carter.  

Michael Mayo stretches his voice through layers of heavenly harmonizing, hard-hitting beatboxing, and heartfelt crooning. LA Weekly called him, “without a doubt the best young male jazz singer in Los Angeles.” 

This enagegemnt of Endea Owens & the Cookout and Michael Mayo is made possible in part through the Jazz Touring Network program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Wynton Marsalis' ALL RISE —

MCG Jazz partners with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to present Wynton Marsalis’ All Rise. This one-night-only performance is led by conductor Benjamin Northey and brings together the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, the PSO, and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. Marsalis’ genre-bending symphony fuses jazz, blues, classical, and world music into a monumental work of struggle and redemption.

An Evening with Tamara Tunie
